Stephanie took a break before eleven o’clock Thursday morning between appointments, wondering about the investigation. Neither detective gave an explanation about the details of the case. Ryan left Monica, his partner, to ask the questions. When she did glance his way, his face was indifferent.

They wanted to know about privacy of the salon clients—what information the salon took and retained, how the information was stored, who had access to the information. They asked about her hiring practices and if she did background checks. She did the same as any other business. She would check their references, how many years they’ve worked with their license, verifying their beauty license, but not an in-depth check. She wasn’t hiring for the government or Secret Service.

When they asked for access to the salon’s computer system, she was taken aback. Monica explained they would file for a search warrant. Stephanie told them she had nothing to hide and authorized them to search the computers. On the inside her body shook, but on the outside she was strong, confident, and professional. She wrote the system access and passwords for them on a sheet of paper, along with each employee’s number and password.

Before they left, Monica asked, “Don’t say anything to your employees. Tell them it’s regarding a personal matter.”

“Tell them our visit was about your brother.”

As she glared at Ryan, Monica touched her arm. “It’s pertinent to the case that only you know at this time. Please, if they inquire, say whatever is necessary to not alert them.” She left, thanking her for answering their questions and cooperating with the computer access.

Damned right she would cooperate. The sooner they resolved whatever the hell it was that involved her and her business, the sooner her life would return to normal. She would keep this quiet because if word got out to the public, the negative impact on the salon wouldn’t be good for business.
